Sustainable Agriculture Development Based on Green Economy to Improve Work Ethic and Economy of the Community in Indonesia
Abstract
This study explores the development of sustainable agriculture based on the principles of green economics and Islamic ethics to strengthen work ethic and improve the welfare of the community in Gisting Regency, Tanggamus Regency, Lampung, Indonesia. Based on the Islamic Green Economics and Ethical Sustainability Framework (IGEESF), this research integrates environmental responsibility, ethical awareness, and socio-economic transformation in a rural context. A mixed-methods approach was used, involving 150 smallholders through surveys, interviews, and field observations. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to examine the relationship between Green Farming Practices (GFP), Islamic Ethical Awareness (IEA), Work Ethic (WE), and Community Welfare (CW). The results showed that GAP (β = 0.412) and IEA (β = 0.378) significantly affected WE, while WE strongly predicted CW (β = 0.566). WE also partially mediated the relationship between GAP and CW (β = 0.233), confirming the role of ethical transformation as a behavioral mechanism that links sustainable practices to well-being outcomes. This model shows solid reliability and validity (CR = 0.90–0.93, AVE > 0.60, SRMR = 0.064, R2_WE = 0.58, R2_CW = 0.61). The study concludes that the internalization of Islamic ethical values is essential to drive green economic transformation in rural communities. Instilling faith-based ethics into agricultural knowledge and governance can improve productivity, environmental balance, and social equality. These findings offer a theoretical contribution—by measuring moral construction—and a practical model for sustainable rural development driven by the Islamic values embodied in maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah.
